County seeks Family Volunteer Day participants to benefit local seniors and Meals on Wheels

SOLANO COUNTY – The County of Solano’s volunteer program, in partnership with the Center for Volunteer and Nonprofit Leadership (CVNL) is looking to mobilize volunteers of all ages for a Family Volunteer Day event to benefit Meals on Wheels.  Volunteers will gather at the Joseph Nelson Center, 611 Village Drive in Suisun City on Saturday, November 23 starting at 1 p.m. to help assemble care packages for seniors in the community.  The event is drop-in and will last until 4 p.m.

In collaboration with Meals on Wheels, volunteers will help facilitate gifts to more than 700 seniors throughout Solano County – many of whom live alone – and would love some extra holiday cheer.  Volunteers will fill toiletry bags, make cards, and wrap specialty items. Families interested in participating are asked to bring wrapping paper, socks, playing cards, and toiletry items.

“Our goal is to engage the entire family,” says Rhonda Smith, Volunteer Coordinator for Solano Volunteers.  “Families who volunteer side-by-side have an opportunity to connect and talk, to get to know each other and to make a positive, lasting difference in the communities in which they serve.”

SIGN UP TO PARTICIPATE

For more information on this Family Volunteer Day event, including signing up to become a volunteer and/or making donations, visitwww.SolanoVolunteers.org and click on the “Family Volunteer Day” button.  For other questions, contact Rhonda Smith at (707) 563-1550 andRSm...@CVNL.org.

ABOUT FAMILY VOLUNTEER DAY EVENTS

Family Volunteer Day celebrates the power of families who work together to support their neighborhoods and communities. Each year, thousands of families use the day to teach children valuable lessons about compassion and caring, develop real-life skills, and educate about their community.  Please note, all youth volunteers under age 16 are required to attend with an adult.

ABOUT SOLANO VOLUNTEERS

The Solano County Board of Supervisors approved a contract with Center for Volunteer & Nonprofit Leadership (CVNL) in winter of 2016 to build an online volunteer system to better serve nonprofits and service-minded individuals.  Named “Solano Volunteers,” the online system has matched thousands of individuals to nonprofits since its inception. In addition to providing online volunteer matching services, Solano Volunteers produces National Days of Service and Family Days of Service events.

This week we are getting ready for International Walk to School Day! This Wednesday, students across the country and around the world will be walking to school. This is a great opportunity to try a green way to get to school, organize a walk with friends, and make a difference in the traffic congestion around your school! If you live too far to walk, park a few blocks away and walk the rest. So grab your tennis shoes and your friends, and skip the car. Be a Safe Routes Superhero and Walk instead of riding on Wednesday!

Kids are always watching - Are you a good driver role model? Here are some tips for drivers to help keep pedestrians safe in your neighborhood and around schools.

  1. When driving put your phone in the backseat, or out of sight. Distracted driving is dangerous to you, other

    drivers and pedestrians.

  2. Follow the speed limit! Unless posted lower, the speed limit is 25 MPH in residential and school zones

(within 500 to 1,000 feet of a school).

  3. Give pedestrians the Right-of-Way. Be extra careful when driving at night or in bad weather.

  4. Stop at the crosswalk line, to help other drivers see the pedestrian and stop too.

  5. Pay extra attention when driving in an area where pedestrians might be: parking lots, shopping centers,

    city downtown locations.

This week we focus on what to teach your young ones about safe walking. Here are some walking safety tips everyone should know:

  1. It is always best and safest to walk on the sidewalk. If there isn’t a sidewalk, you should walk facing the cars as far to the left as possible.

  2. Make sure you can see and be seen. Wear bright colored clothing when during dusk and nighttime, use a flashlight if it is dark.

  3. Children under 10, should cross the street with an adult. Young children may not be able to judge the speed of a car and decide if it is safe to cross.

  1. Make eye contact with drivers before stepping into the crosswalk or crossing a street. Make sure they see you are there.

  2. When walking in neighborhoods, watch for cars turning into and backing out of driveways.

  3. Never run out or cross the street from between cars. Drivers may not see children over the car.

Studies have shown that overweight children and teens are more likely to become obese as adults. To maintain a healthy weight, kids need 60 minutes of physical activity every day. Walking to and from school is a perfect way to schedule routine activity in our student’s day.

Exercise not only helps students maintain a healthy weight, it is also linked to a better performance in school. Walking to and from school is an excellent way to keep students on the road to success.

Stay Alert in your car and on your feet

In March of 2019, VUSD purchased a Foamstream weed abatement system that uses only biodegradable and non-toxic compounds in combination with steam to kill unwanted plants. The system will be piloted this summer in hopes of stepping away from chemical use for a multitude of applications.

Two local news stories from February discussed the technology and included VUSD:

e-cigarette and vaping session

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) most e-cigarettes contain nicotine, which is addictive. Nicotine exposure can also harm adolescent brain development, which continues into the early to mid-20s.

Solano County Office of Education (SCOE) Youth Development Services staff and members of the Solano Youth Coalition and will lead a one-hour informational session on current trends in tobacco products such as vape pens and e-cigarettes, the health effects, how students access the products, what the products look like, and current laws pertaining to tobacco products.

This session will be held in the VHS Library, and is open to all VUSD parents and members of the community.
