Congratulations to the Robo Knights for their 17th place finish at the always competitive First Robotics Competition Sacramento Regional. Though they finished out of playoff contention, this was their best finish yet for the 3rd year team and we wish them the best of luck this weekend in Idaho!

nolan sullivan

Superintendent Jane Shamieh and Board of Education President Shelley Dally presented Board member Nolan Sullivan with an award of appreciation for his years of service on the VUSD Board. Mr. Sullivan has a long history of serving students, not only as a Board member, but as the Chief Organizer for Measure A, the President of the Vacaville Public Education Foundation (VPEF) the Chair of Loop the Lagoon charity run and more. Nolan did not run for re-election so that he could spend more time with his young family, but we expect he will continue to have a strong and positive presence in our community. Thank you Nolan for all that you do.

We have a new program called BCOL -- Buckingham Charter Online Learning. It's split into two branches, one of which may be a great fit for your family. One branch is BCOL-H, with the H standing for Hybrid. This is essentially what used to be called BCAL -- students may take three courses on site (depending on availability) and the rest online. The other branch is BCOL-D, with the D standing for Distance. This is a completely online independent study program, but is run by Buckingham teachers who will be regularly communicating via Skype, FaceTime, or in person with the students and parents.

The goal is to provide a high-quality education with more flexibility for students and families that need it. The rigor and expectations are just as high, and the teacher support is just as readily available. Both programs use Edgenuity's online learning system, which utilizes video lectures, quizzes, assignments, papers, and tests to address a variety of learning styles. There will also be teacher-led additions, including Khan Academy practice, math support meetings, and science labs. Math support and science labs provide hands-on opportunities for students to put their learning into practice or get extra in-person help on difficult topics from highly-qualified teachers.

There are some huge perks of enrolling in one of these two programs. The first is that your child will be considered a Buckingham student, which means that he or she will be able to attend school events and try out for sports. Secondly, he or she will have the option to come onto campus part-time or full-time at the semester if there is room. Students enrolling in BCOL will sign a Master Agreement which commits them to the program semester by semester; after that they can continue with Distance, Hybrid, or on-site (again, if there's room).

There will be an informational meeting on Friday, May 27th at 3:00pm to get more information, have any questions answered, and enroll if interested. It will take place in Room 4 at the school; this is on the 188 (main office) side. Please let us know if you are able to come to the meeting by RSVPing here. This is a great new program that will open doors for even more students, which is a very exciting prospect. We hope to see you at the meeting!

Social Media class for parents: Wednesday, June 1st, 6:30 PM at Educational Services Center, 401 Nut Tree Rd. Vacaville in the Board room.

VUSD and the Vacaville Police Department are hosting a free class to help parents learn about current trends, aps, devices capabilities and dangers that face our kids.

RECENT  NEWS: A New York state man was arrested by federal authorities following an investigation by Vacaville police that included a then 12-year-old victim in Vacaville. Homeland Security agents arrested Robert J. Garneau, 21, of Warwick, New York on charges of online child exploitation.

As social media trends change day to day and technology advancements do the same, keeping up with devices and social media can be challenging for parents. Even parents who are up on social media might be surprised about what aps are now available and what kids can be exposed to.

Children 5-11 years naturally wake early. Teens 12-18 years naturally wake later, despite bed times.

Researchers have studied the effect of delaying start times for high school students and have found that even a modest shift in start times benefits adolescent students.

Teen experience a biological shift in their internal clocks that causes them to be alert at typical bedtimes and to have difficulty waking early in the morning. Because they are drowsy in the morning, teens have more trouble:

  • being alert in school
  • paying attention
  • solving problems
  • coping with stress
  • retaining information.

In hopes of creating the best learning environment possible for our students, VUSD is evaluating the start times for each school.

How would you be affected by a change in school start times?

Please take 10 minutes to consider the aspects of school start time changes and tell us what you think. Info and survey at http://www.vacavilleusd.org/times

INFORMATION REGARDING CONFIDENTIAL STUDENT DATA

A recent lawsuit against the California Department of Education (CDE) is impacting all school districts across the state, including the Solano SELPA, of which Vacaville Unified is a member district.

In April 2012, two organizations, the Morgan Hill Concerned Parents Association and the Concerned Parent Association, filed a lawsuit against the CDE alleging widespread, systemic non-compliance by local education agencies with special education laws. The suit also alleges the CDE fails to monitor, investigate and correct such non-compliance in accordance with the law. The CDE denies these allegations and is actively defending the litigation.

The Solano County Office of Education and our local school districts are not involved in the lawsuit and are not the subject of any of the suit’s allegations.

Nonetheless, as a part of this lawsuit, CDE has been ordered by the court to release all data it has collected on general and special education students since Jan. 1, 2008.

For more information regarding the release of this data and how you can file an objection with the court to consider not releasing your data, visit:  http://www.cde.ca.gov/morganhillcase. You may also contact the California Department of Education at 916-319-0800.

While the Vacaville Unified School District values the personal beliefs and perspectives of our District families, new legislation now prevents VUSD from accepting waivers pertaining to vaccinations. The new legislation (SB 277) states that, as of January 1, 2016, personal belief exemptions for state-mandated immunizations will no longer be accepted when registering students for school in Transitional Kindergarten, Kindergarten, and for the Tdap requirement for 7th grade. Parents who choose not to immunize their student have the option of home schooling or an independent study program.  More information about SB 277 is available at shotsforschool.org.

SRPactions.pngKnow what do to during a school site emergency. Learn about our emergency protocols to keep our students safe at this informative parent meeting.

In order to prepare for emergency events at school sites, VUSD and the City of Vacaville Police Department have been implementing a new school safety program called Standard Response Protocol (SRP).

The SRP is a universal response to an incident at any school site. A severe weather event, fire, accidents, intruders, and earthquakes are some of the safety scenarios that are planned and trained for by students, teachers, staff, and administration. This meeting will explain the SRP and will be directed by Vacaville PD and VUSD.

Wednesday, January 20, 2016
at Vacaville High School Little Theater

Thursday, January 21, 2016
at Fairmont Charter Elementary School Multipurpose Room

Monday, January 25, 2016
at Vaca Pena Middle School Gym

Parent training is the same for all school sites and multiple sessions will be held. Training sessions may not be located at your child's school.

Buckingham Charter’s IM2 and AP Calculus teacher, Nate Rowe has added another accolade to his professional resume.  Nate was recently named as an Ambassador for the Khan Academy LearnStorm Initiative, which is piloting programs in the Bay Area, Chicago, Idaho and Ireland.

Here is small explanatory excerpt from Khan Academy about their Ambassador Network:

Khan Academy (KA) is on a mission to provide a free world-class education for anyone, anywhere.  At KA, we have wanted to create an Ambassador program to support and engage with enthusiastic and thoughtful educators for some time.  Our newest initiative, LearnStorm, has provided the perfect opportunity to start building our Ambassador network in collaboration with a small group of some of the best educators we know.

Our goal with the Khan Academy Ambassador program is to empower a select network of innovative educators who will share their expertise and promote KA in their communities. We are excited for this group joining to form an in-person and online professional community that encourages, supports and inspires one another.

Ambassadors will be responsible for facilitating workshops, supporting classroom teachers and the broader community learning to use KA, and attending local conferences or events when appropriate. Ambassadors will be our on-the-ground experts, sharing their own educator experience and discussing ways KA can better serve students and communities.

Anyone interested in more information regarding Khan Academy and LearnStorm Initiative may contact Nate at NathanaelR@vacavilleusd.org.

Individual student reports from the Smarter Balanced Tests last Spring will be sent home before the end of September. Parents who do not receive a report by October should contact the school.

These new reports highlight strengths in key areas for both language arts (reading, writing, listening, and research) and mathematics (problem solving, using concepts and procedures, and in communicating mathematical reasoning.)

For each area, students will be scored as either below standard, at or near standard, or above standard.

Parent guides and more useful information can be found on the CAASSPP web page at the link below.

Solano County District Attorney Krishna Abrams would like all families to know the importance of good school attendance. Several county agencies have come together to make ending truancy a common goal.

  • Up to 75% of children who miss 18 days or more of school a year without a valid excuse will end up dropping out of high school.
  • Children who drop out of high school are 8 times more likely to end up in jail or prison than those who graduate.
  • 68% of prisoners are high school dropouts.

Working with the Vacaville Teachers Association, the district released tentative student calendars for the 2015-16 school year, available at the link below. If approved, the school year would look similar to the current year with weeklong breaks for Thanksgiving, Presidents week, and Spring recess, along with the traditional 2-week winter break. School would start August 13, 2015.

LOCAL CONTROL FUNDING FORMULA (LCFF) AND THE LOCAL CONTROL ACCOUNTABILITY PLAN (LCAP)

It is an exciting time in education, particularly in the Vacaville Unified School District. As you are aware, the state implemented a new method of funding public schools called the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF). The LCFF has been passed by legislation to provide a more equitable, rational and efficient approach to allocating resources to all School Districts. This formula is structured to do what the name implies – allow local insight and meaningful conversations from parents, employees, and the community of their schools.

Another new component to this process is the Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP). To ensure that the funding is targeted at the needs of all students in VUSD, as well as the identified subgroups of English Learners, Low Income, and Foster Youth, the District will begin the process of developing a Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP).

As an involved partner with our district, I invite you to share your input and perspective based on the following Eight Priorities established by the California Department of Education for the LCAP, and also provide suggestions you feel will assist us in providing an optimum learning environment for students in the Vacaville Unified School District. Your input into this survey will be taken into consideration while developing the school district’s Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP):
